Travel with a Handicap

Traveling with the Handicap or with a disability can be very challenging, but so worth it. My wife spends most of the time inside our home, so when she is feeling well enough to travel we make the most of each minute.

For us it is much easier to travel in an RV , especially for long vacations. It gives her the comforts of home and it is easier for her to get around. When you live with a handicap, sleeping in a familiar bed can be very comforting.

An RV also gives you a little more flexibility. RV parks are much cheaper per night stay than hotels, so if my wife doesn't feel like she can travel, we just extend the visit and wait until she feels better to move to the next location.

My wife has really enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas and Disney World . These are very handicap friendly places. Wheelchair/scooter rentals are reasonable and it's easy to get around in them.

My wife prefers a wheelchair at most of the Disney Parks because she can stay in the chair for the rides she likes to go on. Scooters are not allowed on most of the rides, so you will have to transfer to a wheelchair or just walk to get on the ride if you are in one.

The one park she does rent a scooter for is the Animal Kingdom. This park is really difficult to push a wheelchair through. It's a beautiful park, but the hills do me in after a short time.

"Vegas" is a very scooter friendly town. They easily roll onto the monorail and are maneuverable thoughout the casinos. My wife forgot to charge her chair one night and ran out of juice late one night while trying to get back to our room though another casino. The workers in the casino pushed her and her chair to a plug and charged the chair for her right there. They even offered her a beverage while she waited!

She was very impressed and always chooses Las Vegas when I ask her where to next.

So there's no need to sit at home just because you have a little or a lot of trouble getting around. There are plenty of options out there. You are only limited by your imagination.
